How to take apart your brand new iPhone 4S [video]

If you managed to get your hands on an iPhone 4S yesterday, I bet you can’t wait to get your screw drivers out take it apart. Well maybe not, but if you’re curious about what goes into your shiny new iPhone 4S but don’t fancy taking yours apart, there is another way.
The guys form iFixYouri have done all the hard work for you and put together a video showing the whole process. It covers everything from taking the iPhone 4S out of the box right down to spreading out the sum of its parts all over a desk.
A lot of the features are very similar, but not the same to the CDMA and GSM, including the        screen, dock connector, back glass, and the vibrator(same as the CDMA), making replacement and repair services readily available.
What could be better than that? Well the sound track to the video, over to you Rick Astley!

Siri hacked to run on iPhone 4

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has hacked Siri, the artificially intelligent voice control system on iPhone 4S to run on last year’s iPhone 4. An initial hiccup, GPU support, has already been overcome. Another hiccup, Apple’s servers not responding to queries from Siri running on iPhone 4, is still and issue.
Troughton-Smith also suggests it could theoretically be possible to hook the Siri front end into Microsoft’s TellMe, or Google’s servers instead.
If Troughton-Smith could get Siri running on an iPhone 4′s single core Apple A4 processor, it probably makes you wonder why Apple didn’t include it in iOS 5 for iPhone 4. Apple, of course, famously didn’t bring video recording to iPhone 3G when Jailbreakers had it running. It’s either a feature they want to keep exclusive to iPhone 4S for now, or something Apple’s perfectionistic nature won’t allow them to do if it’ s not 100% smooth and performant. Or both.
Stellar work by Troughton-Smith, check out his Twitter feed, below, for more.

Apple Confirms iPhone 5 Will be Announced on October 04

iphone-5-october-event
It’s official! Apple sent invitations around to its October 04 event, and the invite readers “Let’s Talk iPhone”. I guess this is all the confirmation we needed for an already established rumor, right?
This should also be the first event with the new CEO, Tim Cook. Some are saying it will be a good test for him. Some are saying that anyone could grab applauses announcing the iPhone 5….
If you want to see what other news outlets are saying about the event, including possible appearances and announcements to be made there, check
Lastly, if you want to get a refresher of what are the likely features of the new iPhone check out the article The new iPhone… on 9to5 Mac. Here’s a quotation from it:

iPhone 5 – The Moment When Apple Needs To Partner With More Carriers

iphone-carriers
Sprint needs to get the iPhone 5 in their portfolio or else, they simply risk losing more customers. AppleInsider reports that Sprint’s chief executive, Dan Hesse “accused” the iPhone of being the biggest reason for customers migration.
At a recent even organized by Cnet, Hesse told the press: “If we get it, if, we may have to adjust our guidance for that.” However, previous rumours did indicate that Sprint could carry the fifth version of the iPhone, along with AT&T and Verizon.
Knowing how huge the iPhone 5 charisma will be after its launch, we can see why Sprint would want this smartphone in their portfolio. We can say for sure that in the same position is T-Mobile; whose CFO announced in a note to T-Mobile’s employees that they will not get the iPhone 5 this year. This leaves room for speculation – could it mean that Sprint and T-Mobile can conclude their deals with Apple in 2012, then?

Is October Really The Launch Month for iPhone 5?

iphone5-october
The release of the next-generation iPhone seems to be the greatest teaser in the tech-world today. Details regarding the features and specifications of Apple’s new device, the so-called iPhone 5, are still lacking. But most important for the people who are waiting eagerly for the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5, the release date remains a mystery.
There are some websites and blogs already recommending people to sell their iPhone 4 in order to be ready to buy the imminent iPhone 5.
The release date for the new iPhone has sparked much speculation lately. Rumors are the iPhone 5 will probably be available for sale on October 7 or October 14. If the iPhone 5 is released on October 7, it means that the pre-orders for iPhone 5 should start around September 30. With the expectation that the release of a new product would normally be announced weeks before the official market launch date, Apple fans are starting to wonder if October really is the launch month for iPhone 5.

Ahead of iPhone 5 Launch, Mac Sales Increase, iPod May Decrease

iphone-5-launch
The Cupertino based company is now enjoying an increase in sales of Mac OS X-based devices, says Piper Jaffray’s Gene Münster who shared an NPD data, via Business Insider. And this sale could be somehow influenced by the iPhone 5 launch factor.
The data claims that Mac sales are surging due to popularity of new Mac computers, like the quad-core iMacs, MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air all introduced this year.
But also this data claims that the iPod sales are in decline. This isn’t a “shocker”, because the iPhone is a popular device, which is also an iPod Touch courtesy of the built-in iPod app of the iOS operating system. But, as the iPhone is getting more and more versatile, consumers tend to ignore the iPod. That’s why, I personally believe that iPod’s share will still going to decrease in favor of the iPhone.

iPhone 5 To be Released On October 1st In Canada

iphone-5-canada
New rumors on iPhone 5 launch indicate an October release, October 1st to be more precise. The recent speculation comes from Canadian wireless carrier Telus, who has recently leaked a document indicating the exact date of Apple’s fifth generation iPhone launch.
If the rumor is true, than Apple will be launching its next-gen iPhone on a Saturday. The scenario doesn’t quite fit the company’s tradition, since Apple’s devices have been historically launched on Thursdays and Fridays. On the other hand, the leaked document seems to list not only the launch date for iPhone 5, but also of other devices and the October 1st date might indeed be accurate.

Following iPhone 5 Prototype Loss, Apple Is Concerned About Security

iPhone 5 Prototype
Apple posted two positions for product security management, due to the so-called loss of a prototype iPhone 5.
The candidate would be in charge of protecting of and managing risks to Apple’s unreleased products and related intellectual property, according to the listing. Furthermore, the position would reside in Apple’s Cupertino, Calif. headquarters and would require up to 30 percent travel (international and domestic) and implies collaborations with other security managers.

iPhone 4S to woo customers from 4G Droids, says analyst

Apple will win customers away from 4G Android phones by offering the iPhone 4S at a lower cost but still managing to rake in hefty profit margins.
At least, that's the take of Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. In an investors note released Sunday, Whitmore compared the prices of the iPhone 4S with those of several Droid phones. Though the monthly fees for each phone are comparable and depend on the carrier, the upfront cost for the new iPhone is lower, which Whitmore believes will lure in more customers.
The 16GB iPhone 4S costs $199 with a two-year contract. Though that price is in line with other 3G phones, it represents a lower entry point than that of key 4G Android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S II ($229), the Droid Bionic, ($299) and the HTC Thunderbolt ($249).
"We expect customers who do the math to opt for the iPhone," Whitmore said in his note. "In addition, those who don't do the math, will likely reach for the lower upfront acquisition cost of the 4S compared vs. these Droids."
Despite the iPhone's lower initial cost, Apple will still see healthy profit margins as a result of the huge subsides paid by the carriers.
With two-year contracts, the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB iPhone 4S will sell to customers for $199, $299, and $399, respectively. Whitmore pegs Apple's costs for manufacturing the iPhone 4S from $170 to $220 depending on the capacity of the phone. But since the carriers kick in around $450 to subsidize each new iPhone, Apple stands to generate a profit margin of around 71 percent to 73 percent. That compares with a profit margin of only around 38 percent for the iPod Touch.
"Looking forward, we expect the refreshed iPhone / iOS upgrade / Siri and channel/carrier expansion to support strong iPhone demand over multiple quarters," Whitmore added.
Calculating the average total cost of ownership over two years among the three U.S. iPhone 4S carriers, the analyst found Sprint to be the cheapest at $88 per month, followed by AT&T at $93 each month, and Verizon Wireless the highest at $98 a month.

Apple iPhone 4S gets benchmarked; slower than iPad 2

Apple's iPhone 4S smartphone isn't even on store shelves yet, but benchmarks have leaked out on the Web, suggesting the device holds up quite well against most products, except the iPad 2.
Apple's iPhone 4S has been benchmarked, according to reports.According to benchmark data obtained by Anandtech from a host of sources, Apple's iPhone 4S beats out all devices, except for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 in a JavaScript benchmark, but easily bests that tablet (and all other Android-based devices) in a Rightware BrowserMark benchmark. However, when the smartphone is pitted against the iPad 2, it falls short in processor integer performance and in a 720p-frames-per-second test, according to Anandtech.
That data makes Anandtech believe that the iPhone 4S comes with an 800MHz A5 dual-core processor, and not the same 1GHz A5 dual-core processor found in the iPad 2. Geekbench, which provided some benchmark information, says the processor frequency is about 716MHz.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S last week at a special event in its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. The company touted the iPhone 4S' dual-core processor, but stopped short of providing detailed information on the chip. That said, the company did say that the processor in the iPhone 4S will easily overshadow the A4 chip found in the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4S arrives early to lucky German buyer

An iPhone 4S arriving four days ahead of launch.Apple's next iPhone doesn't arrive until Friday, but one German customer has already received a unit ahead of time and provided photos of the packaging and the new Siri feature in action.
German site Macerkopf.de (via MacStories) posted photos the buyer shared of the 32GB model. The outside box doesn't bear any notable changes from the iPhone 4's packaging except for the obvious "S" on the side.
Apple and some carrier partners have already begun shipping the new iPhone to customers, including Sprint and Apple itself, with shipping carriers expected to hold delivery until Friday when the phone goes on sale in the U.S. and other launch countries.
Last year Apple offered some preorder buyers shipments of the iPhone 4 a day before the device hit stores, something that could happen this time around as well.

Road test: Aviiq Portable Charging Station

As a traveling journalist who stays on the move with a MacBook Pro, iPhone, digital camera, and iPad 2, I was eager to get ahold of the Aviiq Portable Charging Station to see if it might offer a compact mobile power source capable of dismissing my worries about whether my devices are juiced and ready to roll.
The idea behind the Charging Station is simple: Give buyers a place to tuck away all of their USB-charged devices and cords while they charge. You can keep all of your high-tech eggs in one basket while they juice up, if you like to mix your food and drink metaphors.

Turn your iPhone into a radiation detector

First up was the $330 Scosche RDTX-PRO. Now Scosche has released the lower-priced and slightly less accurate RDTX version for around $270. It detects gamma radiation above 120keV within +/- 10 percent accuracy. Loosely translated from geek speak, that just means that you'll definitely know if you're in a dangerous spot.
The radTEST app is free and breaks the metering down into simple green, yellow, and red zones so you can tell at a glance if you should be getting the heck out of there.
Since we're talking about an iPhone app here, there is the obligatory social-media connection. You can tag locations on Google Maps, and Tweet and Facebook your radiation results to let your friends know where it's safe--or not--to roam.

Out With the IPhone 3GS, In With the IPhone 5

AT&T drastically dropped the price of the refurbished iPhone 3GS to $10 with a two-year contract, suggesting it may be clearing out its inventory before the release of the iPhone 5.

The Dallas, Texas-based carrier said a brand new 3GS will still cost $50. The iPhone 5 is reportedly set to debut in September as suppliers begin to ramp up production.

Apple plays it safe with iPhone 4S, targets iPhone 3GS owners

We have all read the news on the new iPhone 4S and enjoyed the Great Debate with myself and Jason Perlow and see that Apple once again shows the world that the iPhone is not about the latest and greatest in wireless technologies. Apple is focused on the iPhone upgraders at this point and I think this iPhone 4S is really intended for the iPhone 3GS owner looking to make their 2-year upgrade.
